PlayStation 5: haptic and auditory sensations in the spotlight in the first commercial for the Sony console

Still without price or release date, the PlayStation 5 is already entitled to its first advertising spot. For a little over a minute, it highlights the 3D audio of the console as well as the haptic feedback of its DualSense joysticks.

Unlike the Xbox Series X, the PlayStation 5 still doesn’t have a specific release date, with Sony so far just indicating a vague end-of-year period for the launch of its new console. This does not prevent him from launching a first global advertisement to highlight the immersive technologies brought by the PS5.

This is therefore an opportunity for Sony to highlight the 3D audio enabled by the Tempest 3D AudioTech engine of the PlayStation 5, but also and above all the haptic feedback technology of its DualSense controller, which will allow you to feel everything. a panel of effects simulated with much more precision than with conventional vibration motors. Associated with adaptive triggers that can also simulate a whole range of physical sensations, this new haptic technology is also praised by the developers that Sony took care to question to better explain what it will really consist of in practice.

A variety of effects to enhance immersion

Brian Horton, Creative Director of Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales specifies as well as “The extreme finesse of the haptic feedback” will allow for example to indicate the origin of an attack, to simulate a bioelectric discharge by making crackle the charge in the left side of the controller before sending it via the right side. Dinga Bakaba, Game Director Deathloop, explains for his part that the triggers can be blocked when our weapon jams, while Kenji Kimura, director of Ghostwire: Tokyo, specifies that his game will use the triggers to simulate the feeling of recoil when shooting with a firearm. The latter, however, indicates that his teams are still looking for other ways to use adaptive triggers and haptic feedback that “Provides an increased range of effects” and authorizes “Meticulously adjusted feedback throughout the game”. More commonly, since this is already enabled by the Xbox One controller triggers in some racing games, the DualSense’s adaptive triggers will also be used to simulate the effects of ABS braking in some racing games. Gran Turismo 7.

In general, the studio managers interviewed underline the interest of these haptic and sound technologies in immersion, as Gavin Moore, creative director at SIE Japan Studio, sums it up: “The haptic feedback [fait] integral part of the experience, participates in the immersion in the game world and gives relief to the gameplay. The combination of visual, auditory and tactile aspects propels this new generation into the future of gaming. ” Of course, we only ask to believe it, and we also hope that all these haptic effects will not get the better of the autonomy of the DualSense. The strong increase in the capacity of its battery, discovered not long ago, could therefore find a fairly simple explanation.

A serious rival for the Xbox Series X controller

All these fine details suggest in any case that Sony has put the package so that its DualSense controller is at the heart of the gaming experience. The Xbox Series X controller is about to take a little old ? Microsoft has in any case not announced haptic technology and its new controller has, it seems, not evolved much since that of the Xbox One. If the latter was ahead of the DualShock 4 thanks to its adaptive triggers, its replacement could well this time find itself a little late.
