Pixar, Adobe, Apple, Autodesk, and NVIDIA Form Alliance for OpenUSD to Drive Open Standards for 3D Content

The alliance will support a global collaboration on Universal Scene Description (USD).

San Francisco today Pixar, AdobeApple, Autodesk and NVIDIA along with Joint Development Foundation (JDF), a subsidiary of the Linux Foundation, today announced the formation of the Alliance for OpenUSD (AOUSD) to promote the standardization, development, advancement and growth of Pixar’s Universal Scene Description technology.

The alliance will aim to standardize the 3D ecosystem by extending the capabilities of Open Universal Scene Description (OpenUSD). able to describe Composition and simulate large-scale 3D projects and create a wide range of 3D-enabled products and services.

Pixar Animation Studios developed OpenUSD as a high-performance technology for describing 3D scenes that supports seamless collaboration between tools, data, and workflows. The power and flexibility of OpenUSD, including the ability to preserve artistic characteristics and optimize the production of cinematic content. This makes it ideal as a content platform to meet industry needs and new applications.

Partners will provide a specification document detailing the features of OpenUSD, which will help expand compatibility. It also increases acceptance. integration and use in various fields to be more extensive including the inclusion of requirements in other standards by the committee of those standards As part of this collaboration, the Linux Foundation’s JDF was chosen to oversee the project. This will make the OpenUSD specification open and efficient. while at the same time leading to acceptance through the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).

AOUSD will serve as a key platform to redefine technology collaboration to more industries, with the alliance inviting a wide range of companies and organizations to participate in shaping the future of OpenUSD.

“Universal Scene Description was invented at Pixar and is the technological foundation of our state-of-the-art animation process,” said Steve May, Pixar’s Chief Technology Officer and President of AOUSD. It has been used in the production of Pixar movies for years. The project’s source code was released in 2016. Today, OpenUSD technology extends beyond film. visual effects and animation to other industries that increasingly rely on 3D data for media exchange Therefore, the announcement of the establishment of AOUSD signals an interesting next step: the continued advancement of OpenUSD as a technology and its role as a global standard.”

“We at Adobe believe in providing artists with flexible and powerful solutions that work on a wide range of devices,” said Guido Quaroni, Senior Director of Engineering, Adobe’s 3D&I division. The creative process multiplies the value of each package and device. OpenUSD was developed as one of the This is a ‘multiplier’ and we are delighted to see so many companies working together to support such open and cutting-edge technology.”

“OpenUSD will give wings to the next generation of AR experiences. From art creation to content distribution “USD is an important foundational technology for the next-generation platform, and can produce more spatial computing in a variety of ways,” said Mike Rockwell, Apple’s vice president of Vision Products Group. such as visionOS, as well as developer tools such as the new Reality Composer Pro, and we look forward to continuing to grow into a widely accepted standard.”

“Whether you’re building a CG world or modeling digital objects, or looking to the future of the 3D Web, content creators need to be aligned to collaborate and share information across tools, services and platforms,” said Gordon Bradley, Media & Entertainment Fellow, Autodesk. “We are honored to support the Alliance for OpenUSD as it drives interoperable 3D support for visual effects, animation, and more, and supports our vision of helping our customers design. and create a better world.”

“OpenUSD provides developers, artists and 3D designers with a complete framework to manage large-scale industrial digital content creation and cross-app simulation workloads. said Guy Martin, Director of Open Source and Standards at NVIDIA. various to support the 3D world and industrial digitalization.”

AOUSD Steering Committee Members will be speaking at the Academy Software Foundation’s Open Source Days on August 6th and the SIGGRAPH conference at Autodesk Vision Series On August 8 at 1:00 PM Pacific Time in Room 404A.
