Marina Verriest, a 70-year-old woman, died violently after her family’s pit bull dog brutally attacked her at her home in Albertson, Long Island, NY, yesterday afternoon.

The victim’s husband returned home from work around 1 p.m. to discover the 7-year-old dog dragging his wife’s mutilated body through their backyard, according to Nassau County police and neighbors.

It is unclear when the attack began, but police said when the husband arrived at the house, “the dog was still eating the body”reported New York Post. The unidentified man immediately called the police. When they arrived, the dog turned on the first officer to arrive on the scene, who opened fire, killing it.

EMS paramedics pronounced the victim dead. “The scene was pretty horrible. We don’t know what time the attack occurred, but there was obviously many mutilations on the body and the arm, the face, the legs,” Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder said at a news conference.

The officer who shot the dog is now receiving treatment at the hospital for trauma after seeing the damage the pit bull had done to the elderly woman.

The dog belonged to the couple’s stepson who lived there until he died in a motorcycle accident a few weeks ago. Police believe the animal had been living with the family its entire life, Ryder said. Police do not believe there was any wrongdoing in the tragic incident.
