Pictograms, a before and after for people with autism

Today is celebrated World Autism Awareness Day and for this reason we want to contribute our grain of sand and echo this year’s motto to commemorate this anniversary: “Autism close to you.” Thus, we have approached the local delegation of Aspanaes (association of parents of people with autism spectrum disorder) to meet two of its users, Pablo and Xavi, who talk to us about autism and other particularities of their day to day. day. The two have been attending the SAF (Support and Training Service) where they prepare, among other things, for different oppositions. What’s more, they are waiting to know the grade of the last exam they have taken, which they trust they will be able to pass.

So much Xavi as Pablo They have been formed to validate the pictograms that are increasingly placed in public buildings to help people with autism or other cognitive particularities. These drawings must be created by specialized companies and not done lightly.since both their creation and their arrangement when placing them are very important to be able to fulfill their objective of reaching the largest number of audiences.

He Ferrol Council has just completed the installation of numerous pictograms distributed in different municipal offices and thus giving shape to an initiative that they defended in a motion presented in the last mandate. “When we came to government we chose to give greater weight to our own initiative, upon verifying that its development was very simple, having allocated a small financial allocation that was limited to providing pictograms to different rooms of the Town Hall and the pavilion. Esteiro sports center,” he points out. Rosa Martínez Beceiro, Councilor for Social Welfare and main architect of the initiative.

The head of the social area assures that “The economic amount allocated to this chapter was multiplied by five, we asked Aspanaes for advice and we have now just completed the first phase of the project”, a job, he indicated, “very professional and laborious”, for which continuous professional advice has been provided. Thus, Rosa Martínez indicates that The motion that they had presented at the time went far beyond the mere placement of pictograms since it also includes the carrying out pre-work practices at the Council, something that will be addressed in a second phase in the coming months, as was already done with other social entities in the city. Martínez remembers that The governments of José Manuel Rey Varela are characterized by that “close collaboration” with different social entities of the municipal area, which favors the emergence of initiatives such as pictograms, so important for autistic people or people with other communication problems “to be autonomous, enjoying the same rights as any citizen,” says Martínez Beceiro.

The councilor of Social Welfare remembers that these types of elements “not only contribute to improving the daily lives of autistic people, they are also of great help to foreign people who do not know the language and people in general or who present some type of cognitive impairment.”.

Thus, in recent months pictograms have been placed in the Casa Solidaria (20); Esteiro pavilion (19), Caranza sports center (25), Caranza Civic Center (21) and Emprego Center (24). Furthermore, according to Rosa Martínez, the provision of all these drawings has meant an investment of 8,543 euros. The initiative joins other individuals that proliferate in various businesses and establishments and that seek to make life easier for people with ASD or other cognitive difficulties.
