President Hernández in delivery of the Las Mercedes-Villa de San Antonio section

Las Mercedes (Comayagua), February 4. “We said it and we did it. Said and done, this section is finished here at the service of the Honduran people and at the service of Central America ”, President Juan Orlando Hernández highlighted today in the framework of the delivery of the 4.8-kilometer section extension on the CA-5 highway , Las Mercedes-Villa de San Antonio, better known as Las Flores, in Comayagua.

The president led a caravan that started from the Fincas del Carmen restaurant until it reached the Las Mercedes Police Station to verify the good condition of this stretch of the CA-5 road where more than 10,000 vehicles circulate daily.

In this sector of Comayagua there was a real party, where the shouts of joy prevailed, the horns of the vehicles and the Honduran flag shining on this new first-level stretch of highway.

The total cost of the work is $ 20,111,965.59 and was financed by the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI).

This project has a length of 4.8 kilometers, an extension from two to four lanes was made and the construction of a road interchange in the community of Las Mercedes was included

At the event, which took place at the Las Mercedes Police Station, President Hernández recalled that “this section (road section) was a big headache for all of us, it was complicated, there were many accidents.”

He explained that this important road infrastructure work “is to be able to build a logistics system that puts Honduras on the map of America.”

“For this reason,” the president continued, “I tell the deputies that here is the money of the Honduran people, and for those who did not vote in favor of this, well, come now and look at it.”

Importants achievements

President Hernández also broke down the important achievements that his Administration has achieved in security, agriculture, infrastructure and social development axes that include delivery of homes for families with limited economic resources, eco-stoves, water filters and beds, among others.

“Let the Hondurans have no doubt that everything that we have done, has gone well or sometimes badly, has been with the intention that this country change and that it be a different land,” Hernández said.

He reported that to date with the delivery of homes “we have benefited 11,000 families.”

“A new Honduras has to be born after this shock that God has given to the world and the country,” said the president.

“We all have to change, we all have to do things differently and we all have to love each other more; Even if you don’t like how the neighbor talks to you, go and get close to him. It is time to change and for this country to be different ”, he insisted.

“If the people of Honduras have shown anything in the midst of this pandemic and these two storms (Eta and Iota), it is that we are generous people,” said President Hernández.

New image for Comayagua

The mayor of the Villa de San Antonio, Néstor Mendoza, applauded this important achievement that will generate development and change the face of the department of Comayagua

“This is going to benefit all of Central America, not just Honduras. President Hernández, we thank you for that effort and willingness to make this effort to pave this stretch of highway, ”said the mayor.

Mendoza added that “we thank him for that vision, because developing a highway like this is developing Honduras, and this is how the world develops, with this type of road infrastructure projects.”

Wilfredo Bonilla, who was benefited with a decent home when he was relocated due to the construction of the project, assured that “the moment of completion of this work that is executed by our president Hernández has arrived and thank you for the work of my little house… (He made a effort not to cry). This is a fact and you can see it, thank God ”.

“President Juan Orlando Hernández, keep making that good gesture for those who have the least, because God is going to pay you, of that we are sure, and we ask that this is not the last ceremony in our region,” Bonilla said.

Project benefits

With this project, 260 direct jobs and about 500 indirect jobs were generated during the construction period, which lasted 18 months, from its start on April 1, 2019 until its completion on November 15, 2020.
