(CRHoy.com). The modernization works of the road interchange at the height of the Firestone report an advance of 29%.
The Ruta Uno trust, in charge of managing the project, explained that the gabion wall and the piles that will support the expansion of the project are currently being built. flyover located on the General Cañas highway (San José-Alajuela) on the Belén-Heredia route.
The works took more force last February. According to the schedule, the project should be ready by next August.
This intervention is part of the first package of non-postponable works (known as obis) that make up the previous stage of the modernization of the road corridor between San José and San Ramón.
The project includes the expansion of the bridge to 4 lanes in each direction and the expansion of the highway that passes underneath to 2 lanes in each direction. That is, the road that connects Heredia with Belén.
The interventions led to a series of changes in circulation. Among them stand out the implementation of reversible lanes and exclusive passages for buses.
With the modifications, 3 lanes on the road corridor were eliminated. Reversible lanes will be applied (in directions towards Alajuela and towards San José):
- Starting at 12:00 am patient 12:00 pm 2 lanes will operate in the Alajuela-San José direction and 1 lane in the San José-Alajuela direction.
- Starting at 12:00 pm ill las 12:00 amThere will be 2 lanes in the direction San José-Alajuela and 1 lane in the direction Alajuela-San José.
During peak hours, one of the lanes will be exclusively for buses and the other 2 lanes for the rest of automobiles.
Thus, in the morning rush hour, from 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m., the exclusive lane will be enabled only in the Alajuela-San José direction, while in the afternoon rush hour, from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm, the exclusive lane will only work in the San José-Alajuela direction.
“This is going to happen in stages. This means that the construction process will change as the works progress.. In this first stage, work will be done on the western sector of the road and it is diverting to the other side. Once that sector is finished, the traffic will be diverted there, through the new bridge and the other place will be used to carry out the works.
“When this second stage is put into operation, in which traffic is diverted through the new section, which is beginning to be built right now, we will have a road change: there will no longer be 2 lanes to one side and one to the other, but they will be 2 and 2. So, this first stage with the current road changes will be for about 4 months”Explained María José Alvarado, communication supervisor of the Ruta Uno trust, the entity in charge of the modernization project of the San José-San Ramón highway.
Thus the things, the second stage of the project, they would have a lesser impact on vehicular traffic by having 2 lanes in each direction.

The project
With the work, whose investment will be around $ 4.3 million, the current crossing will be expanded to 8 lanes (4 lanes in each direction) on the General Cañas highway and to 4 lanes (2 lanes in each direction) on Route 129 (Belén-Heredia). Also, the improvement of the approach zones is contemplated. The modernization is in charge of the CPC Ruta 1 consortium, made up of the companies Codocsa SA, Pedregal and Cacisa.
The so-called “obis” -distributed in 5 lots- are specific works that will be carried out at 17 interconnection points between the main road and other routes. Also, interventions will be developed in infrastructure points where tightness for vehicles is experienced due to barriers (bridges, in this case).
Initially, the works were valued at $ 115 million: $ 65.75 million contributed by the National Highway Council (Conavi) and $ 50 million that will come from a loan granted by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).
Lot 2 of projects was awarded to the consortium H Solís – TPF Getinsa Euroestudios Ruta Nacional 1 for an amount close to $ 18 million. This second package makes up the expansion of the bridge over the Torres River and the interchange between Route 1 and the Circunvalación road at the height of the Monument to Water. It is expected that for both projects the start order will be issued in the coming weeks.
