Pharmacists protest because they are exempt from the reduced commission on card transactions – 2024-05-03 07:08:38

The pharmacists are asking for their inclusion in the amendment of the Ministry of Finance, which foresees a “maximum commission in transactions with amounts up to ten euros carried out with cards issued in Greece”.

In this order, as stated in a letter to the Minister of Finance K. Hatzidakis, the Panhellenic Pharmaceutical Association (PHFS), included activities such as press agencies, kiosks, convenience stores, mini markets, grocery stores, tailors, dry cleaners, tobacco products, dairy, confectionery etc.

“We are asking who chose and with what procedures and criteria the list of specific professions, the Ministry of Finance, the funds that have been installed as intermediate POS providers or the Banks which at the same time “wash their hands” regarding their own influence on the terms of use them?”, states the PFS, posing the question:

“Really who does this limited list serve? Certainly not the businesses, certainly not the citizens who are most likely to shoulder the daily readjustment of the cost of products and services due to this transaction burden with higher fees in millions of transactions, given the explosive growth of the use of cards in payments.”

The PFS emphasizes that “a large number of pharmacies show low turnover” and at the same time “as a whole, the sector has demonstrated high tax compliance over the years”.

“Nevertheless, the Minister of Finance decided to choose the specific list, ignoring all of this, ultimately favoring the few and powerful intermediaries in the payment chain, i.e. the banks and funds, instead of demanding low commissions at low transaction costs, for the benefit of the majority. The Minister of Finance must include us in this category even after the fact”, concludes the PFS.
