RDS and RDS Direct present the 2nd round of the Northern Trust tournament starting at 3 p.m. Friday.

NORTON, Mass. – It took a disappointing par to make Scottie Scheffler realize that he had hit enough birdies to hand a 59 card on Friday.

With his spectacular second round, Scheffler jumped 70 places at the Northern Trust Open to second place, and he completed the 12th under-60 round in PGA Tour history.

Scheffler confirmed his round of 59 with a birdie on the 18th pennant.

“You don’t often get a chance to land a birdie to drop to 59. I was a little nervous about making my putt, but that’s nothing new,” he said. I get nervous with each of my shots. It’s like that when you play competitive golf. ”

So this is the fifth consecutive year that there has been a round of 59 or better on the PGA Tour.

However, this magnificent score did not generate excitement on the course, while no spectators are allowed around the field. Scheffler was playing with Kevin Streelman and Tony Finau and only one of them knew what was going on.

“There’s no one to hold the boards so I told Tony about it on the 17th hole green. He had no idea, Streelman said. He thought Scottie was minus-7 or minus-8. That’s the difference right now. There would undoubtedly have been energy with supporters following us. ”

While Scheffler was signing his card at the chalet, Dustin Johnson had already made an explosive start on the TPC Boston course.

Birdie. Eagle. Birdie. Eagle. Birdie.

Johnson cut nine pars on his first eight holes and started the second nine with two birdies. He ended up at minus-11 after 11 holes.

Thereafter, Johnson turned into a par machine and he was unable to match Scheffler’s score or even improve it.

Johnson played 60 and grabbed the top spot of the tournament, two strokes ahead of Scheffler and Cameron Davis (65), thanks to a cumulative under-15 score.

“I’m happy with my round anyway,” Johnson said. I am very happy with my position in the standings at the dawn of the weekend rounds. ”

We have to go back to the John Deere Classic in 2010 to note two players who brought in a card of 60 or less on the same day. Those low scores helped to bother Tiger Woods, who only played 71 and is 12 strokes behind Johnson.

“I didn’t have it today,” Woods said. I passed close to breaking a few sticks, but I didn’t. It’s positive.”

Danny Lee (64), Harris English (66) and Louis Oosthuizen (65) share fourth, minus-12.

Mackenzie Hughes posted a score of 68 for a second straight day and is the top-ranked Canadian, tied for 29th at minus-6. His compatriot Corey Conners (65) climbed to a tie for 40th, at minus-5.
