From Monday, April 8, the PFAS sludge will be removed from the Interwaas site in Kattestraat in Sint-Gillis-Waas. About fifty trucks drive to and away from the site for four weeks. The municipality provides additional measures to keep the impact on the neighborhood as minimal as possible.

PFAS sludge has been stirring up emotions in Sint-Gillis-Waas for some time. Exactly a year ago, the harmful substance was discovered in the sewage sludge at the former landfill in Kattestraat.

For Flemish Minister for the Environment and the Environment Zuhal Demir (N-VA) and the Public Waste Agency of Flanders (OVAM), the sludge must be removed as quickly as possible from the site where the construction of the new golf course for the Wase Golf will soon continue. In the meantime, Interwaas was imposed levies of more than 5,000 euros per day, the total sum of these levies now amounts to more than one million euros.

Reason enough to start removing the PFAS-contaminated sludge from next Monday. “The removal will take approximately four to five weeks and will result in an increase in freight traffic,” the municipal council said.

“About fifty trucks will navigate on and around the site every day. In consultation with our municipality, the municipality of Stekene and the Waasland-Noord police zone, measures are being taken to keep the impact on the neighborhood as minimal as possible.” (Read more below the photo)

The empty trucks drive from the traffic interchange at the Tromp via the parallel road along the E34, through the SME zone Klokkenmolen to the Reepstraat and further via the Holstraat to the Kattestraat. A parking ban applies in parts of Holstraat and Kattestraat.

The fully loaded trucks leave the site via Kattestraat to the N403, then turn right to the E34. The cycle path between Reepstraat and Kattestraat along the Wase Golf will be closed.
