Petra Martínez and Juan Margallo have been awarded the National Theater Prize for 2022, which is awarded annually by the Ministry of Culture and Sport and which is endowed with 30,000 euros. The jury assessed, among other things, the willingness of both “to incorporate new forms and scenic trends in their works, so that they were able to make 20th century theater, but also to maintain the scenic excellence that characterized them throughout context of the 21st century, without forgetting his pedagogical work and his theatrical transmission.
Petra Martínez and Juan Margallo, authors, performers and directors, have distinguished themselves for a career started in independent theater groups such as TEI, Tábano and Gayo Vallecano. Subsequently, in 1985, they both founded the Uroc theater company, with which they toured throughout the country and in much of Europe and Latin America.
Among his awards is the Gold Medal of Merit in Fine Arts (2011) to the Uroc theater group. Similarly, Margallo has been awarded twice with the Max Prize for the performing arts and Martínez with the Feroz Prize for Best Actress for her latest film, “La vida era esto”, by David Martín de los Santos.
The jury of the National Theater Prize, chaired by the director general of the National Institute of Performing Arts and Music (INAEM), Joan Francesc Marco, and as vice president, the deputy director general of the INAEM Theater, Javier de Dios, it was composed, as members, by the cultural director and director of the Grec Festival, Francesc Casadesús; cultural journalists Julio Bravo, Rosana Torres and Machús Osinaga; Fefa Noia, deputy director of the National Dramatic Center; Rosa San Secondo, as representative of the University Platform for Feminist and Gender Studies; and Juan Diego Botto, winner of last year’s National Theater Award.
