Péter Szijjártó: Despite all attacks, Hungary stands for peace in Ukraine as soon as possible

Péter Szijjártó stated at the UN Security Council meeting dealing with the situation in Ukraine that the solution to the armed conflict is not to be found on the battlefield, but at the negotiating table.

After the speech of his Ukrainian colleague, he emphasized: it is often heard that the conditions are not yet right for the start of negotiations on a diplomatic settlement, but these conditions are getting worse day by day.

The longer the war lasts and the more weapons arrive, the more people die, the more severe the destruction becomes

– he announced.

“We would like the international community to deliver more peace to our neighborhood than weapons,” he said.

The minister warned that by cutting off communication channels, the world would even give up hope for peace. In this regard, he welcomed all efforts aimed at creating peace, and for this he praised the Vatican, Turkey and the African states.

Regarding the latter, he also touched on the importance of food security, saying that supply disruptions can very easily result in serious security challenges that can have global implications, such as new waves of migration and, as a result, the increase in the threat of terrorism.

“We can see that we can’t handle even one security challenge, so how can we handle more?” he asked the question.

He finally explained that

global security is now in the worst state in the last eighty years, some actors refer “openly and shamelessly” to their nuclear capabilities, the risk of the outbreak of the third world war is higher than ever before.

He believed that the world is speeding towards repeated blockades, and Central Europe has had very bad experiences with this, as the region has always lost out on the conflict between East and West.

“When we argue in favor of civilized East-West cooperation, (.) we do it because it is in our national interest,” he declared. “And the longer the war lasts, the less chance there will be,” he added.
