Peter Sagan’s chances

The last mountain stage of the Tour is here. Peter Sagan always managed to arrive within the time limit without serious problems. After the Pyrenees, he will have a chance to place among the best immediately in two of the last three stages. Don’t waste your energy unnecessarily, get to the finish line and recover as best as possible for Friday. This is the main goal of the Slovak cyclist.

The tour has reached its conclusion. The last four days will decide whether the history of Danish or Slovenian cycling will be written. Jonas Vingegaard has a comfortable lead and good legs before the last mountain test. Tadej Pogačar tried it only once in the previous stage on the penultimate climb. He then showed his heart in the finish, won the stage and reduced four seconds thanks to the bonus.

For Jumbo-Visma, the game plan does not change. In the next Pyrenean stage, the teammates must stay around the yellow Vingegaard as long as possible. In the 17th stage, he was isolated from the penultimate climb to the finish, but he managed everything just fine. Tadej Pogačar, despite the withdrawal of two key mountain domestics, could rely on team support, but he did not get anything out of it.

On the route of the 18th stage, two climbs of the HC category and one hill of the 1st category are prepared. The extremely demanding stage will start its main action again after the 50th kilometer. There are all three hills at just over 80 km, and in combination with the previous stages and the heat, anything is possible.

The first 60 kilometers will be easier. After the speed bonus in Laruns at 58.5 kilometers, the road begins to rise to the Col d’Aubisque. The up to 16-kilometer saddle hides even kilometers with a slope of more than 9%. It will be less than 70 km from the top of the legendary hill to the destination. UAE Team Emirates will want to weaken Vingegaard’s team before the long descent under the Col de Spandelles.

This climb will make its Tour debut. It is the steepest of the entire day and offers perfect ground for attacks. Spandelles is a regularly steep climb averaging 8.3%. In addition, another long descent leads from it. The Hautacam finish hill starts 13.6 km before the finish line and the cyclists will finish at an altitude of 1,520 masl

She last finished a stage of the Tour at Hautacam eight years ago. Vincenzo Nibali completed a great exhibition there when he won a sovereign stage triumph in the yellow jersey and also confirmed the first and only overall victory at the Tour de France. The climb to Hautacam ski resort is very similar to Spandelles. A slightly lower average slope, but three kilometers have an average of over 10%. The first half is moderate, which can be good for the possible lone leader of the stage.

In addition to the yellow jersey, it will also be interesting to watch the climax of the mountain climbing competition. German Simon Geschke is in the lead, but if he fails to get points ahead of Hautacam and Vingegaard or Pogačar win the stage, he will lose his jersey. There are 50 points in the game, the biggest points subsidies await, of course, on the hills of the Hors catégorie – Col d’Aubisque and the finish Hautacam.
