Peta Limjaroonrat Announces Readiness to Become Thailand’s Next Prime Minister After Election Victory

The leader of Thailand’s Progressive Opposition Party, Peta Limjaroonrat, announced today, Monday, that he is “ready to become the next prime minister,” following legislative elections led by his party, “Onward”.

Limjaroonrat announced the victory of his party, which overtook the “Phieu Tai” party, the other pillar of the opposition, with which it wants to form a coalition to reach power and turn the page on nearly a decade of domination by the army and its allies.

The 42-year-old Limjaronrat’s remarks came after preliminary results showed the victory of the “Forward” party.

After 99 percent of the votes were counted, the party, founded in 2014, secured about 150 seats in the 500-seat parliament, according to the election commission.

According to those results, the opposition “Vuya Thai” party, led by 36-year-old Baetong Tarn Shinawatra, won 140 seats and came in second place.

The Phuya Thai party had been leading in opinion polls for several months in the run-up to the election.

And if the two main parties ally, they will need the support of other parties to come to power.

It seemed that the United Thai Nation party led by the current prime minister and former general who led the 2014 coup, Prayuth Chan-ocha – who came to power after the coup – would suffer heavy losses.

But the 69-year-old Chan may remain in power, as the constitution was changed in the aftermath of the coup in favor of the army. Prime minister.

Observers believe that Thailand may witness protests again if the election of the prime minister does not reflect the will of the people.

In this context, Army Chief Narongban Jitkayutai said that there would be no new military coup in the aftermath of the elections.

“There will not be another military coup under his leadership, and the people should remove this term from their vocabulary,” Narongpan said.

The Kingdom of Thailand has witnessed more than 10 coups since the 1930s.
