Peru reported this Wednesday 1-J 100,372 active cases and a total of 9,860 deaths from covid-19, on the first day of the “new normal” proposed by the Government after the end of 107 days of national quarantine to confront the epidemic .

The Ministry of Health noted that the total number of cases since the pandemic came to the country on March 6, rose to 288,477, after detecting another 3,264 in the last hours.

However, once again those recovered exceeded daily cases, since there were 3,710 to add up to a total of 178,245 people who were discharged from a medical center or completed their home quarantine.

The deceased rose to 9,860, after the death of another 183 people, which established a mortality rate of 3.42%.

Thus, the cases still active in the country, which faces a slow decline in the disease in the regions that were most impacted, including Lima, were 629 fewer than in the previous report and were established at 100,372.

Tested and hospitalized

During the last hours 19,983 new tests were taken, between rapid and molecular, which brought the tests to detect the disease to 1,699,369.

Of the total active cases, 11,108 are hospitalized, 59 more than the previous day, and 1,212 of them with mechanical ventilation in intensive care units (ICU), who received another 27 admissions.

By region, Lima remained the epicenter of the epidemic, reaching a total of 159,403 cases and 4,581 deaths, followed by the northern region of Piura, with 17,149 cases and 759 deaths.

Southern regions such as Moquegua, Tacna, Huancavelica and Apurímac continue to report the least number of cases, accumulating 3,381 infected and 54 deaths, together.

New quarantine system

This Wednesday, President Martín Vizcarra assured that his country has started “a new quarantine system”, which is now applied in a “focused” manner, remaining fully in 7 of the 25 regions of the country and, in the others, only for children up to 14 years old, over 65 years old and people with pre-existing diseases.

“The quarantine has not ended, it has changed its strategy. The quarantine, which until yesterday was general, is now focused,” he said.

Vizcarra said that this “is a change of strategy because many citizens thought that the quarantine ended on June 30 and we can do any activity.”

“No, because the virus continues in our midst,” he emphasized.

400 fans arrive

The president participated in the reception of 400 mechanical fans purchased in China and stressed that they will significantly increase the capacity of the country’s ICUs, since last week 250 fans donated by the United States also arrived.

These units will be distributed from next week in the country’s hospitals, so that Peru will have the 2,000 emergency beds that the Government has proposed as a goal for July.

Vizcarra said that the pandemic has shown that the Peruvian health system was not prepared for this type of situation, so he reported that his Government has the goal of reaching 5,000 ICU beds across the country next year to “be prepared to events of this kind or a natural disaster. “

He added that the purchase of mechanical ventilators “is not easy” because in the current situation it has to “compete with the requirements of all the countries of the world”, for which he highlighted the work of institutions such as the Ministry of Health and the Chancellery as well the support of the Chinese authorities.

Joint work for vaccines

The group of experts formed last week to gain access to the future vaccine against covid-19 held a virtual meeting on Wednesday with the Minister of Health, Víctor Zamora, who welcomed that the Executive and the private sector work together to achieve this objective.

Zamora said that his country “works on different fronts”, through alliances with other countries and laboratories so that clinical tests can be done in the country, financial alliances to buy the vaccine, and support for research already being carried out in Peru.

In this regard, businessman Carlos Neuhaus, spokesman for the group of experts, explained that efforts are being made to get the vaccine tested in the country to facilitate its use when its marketing is authorized.

He explained that the most advanced project is that developed by the University of Oxford and the pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca and considered that Peru can be considered in the final phase of the tests as it is the sixth country with the most cases in the world.

“The Oxford vaccine is the most developed, suddenly we could get a percentage of that to come to Peru. Unfortunately we are in a ranking of the 10 most affected by this crisis and perhaps this gives us a leverage effect, an unfortunate advantage” he commented.
