Peru, the sixth country in the world with the highest number of confirmed cases of Covid-19, registered this Sunday, for the first time, more than 10,000 new infections in one day, which also includes cases not counted in the previous seven days.
The Andean country, whose population is around 33 million inhabitants and which since this Sunday returned to mandatory Sunday confinement, registered 10,143 new cases and thus added a total of 535,946 confirmed infections, and 26,287 deaths due to the disease, with 206 new deaths registered in the last hours, according to the latest report from the Ministry of Health (Minsa).
The number of hospitalizations, meanwhile, rose from the 13,947 reported on Saturday to 14,074 this Sunday, of which 1,533 are on mechanical ventilation in intensive care units (ICU).
According to an analysis published this Sunday by the newspaper Trade, the number of fatalities that the pandemic has claimed has placed Peru as the second with the highest mortality rate, with 78 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants due to Covid-19.

The lethality of the virus in Peru is only surpassed by Belgium, which registers 85 per 100,000 inhabitants.
Mandatory Sunday lockdown
As a measure that seeks to curb the rapid rise in the number of SARS-CoV-2 infections, the Peruvian government established on August 12 the application of a mandatory Sunday confinement at the national level.
This Sunday, which was its first day of application, the streets of Lima were kept with few motorized vehicles, many of them dedicated to the activity of the delivery of products at home, one of the activities that are allowed, as well as the transit of personnel necessary for the provision of food supply, health, medicine, among others.
For their part, the Armed Forces and the National Police toured the public thoroughfare to ensure compliance with the restrictive measure; the ministers of state also carried out this supervision.
This measure is also added to the targeted confinement applied to the regions of Arequipa, Ica, Junín, Huánuco, San Martín and Madre de Dios; and also in 36 provinces of another 13 departments.
