Personnel: The new deputy director of the Schwedt Music and Art School is a woman

Lysann Vahrenhold is the deputy director of the Schwedt music and art school. The post was vacant for many years. Director Volker Rehberg did the work alone. “But the school has developed rapidly in the last 15 years and has long needed a management team,” says school director Volker Rehberg.

The arts sector is the largest in the whole of Brandenburg

Because of the increased number of pupils, much more parenting discussions and coordination in the teaching staff have become necessary. 80 percent of the lessons would be done by permanent teachers. The art area at the Schwedt Music and Art School is the largest in the whole of Brandenburg. “A new structure was needed,” recalls Volker Rehberg. The city council has approved a new statute for this school and the proposed staff development.

Lysann Vahrenhold is 39 years old and the mother of two children. She grew up in Halle and studied art education at the Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design. By then she already had the job of a florist in her pocket. Since 2009 she has been working at the Schwedt music and art school. She started out as a partial retirement replacement for the artist and teacher Peter Ring.

Students love their teacher – some took them to art school

After two years, the initially limited position was changed to a permanent one. Many children and young people love Lysann Vahrenhold because of her cheerfulness and tenacity. You cannot imagine the field of art without your teacher. She accompanied some of the children she taught in elementary school up to high school graduation and even to study at art college.

“I was able to develop myself further as a teacher at this school and live out my strengths,” she says and finally applied for the advertised position as deputy director. “Volker Rehberg gives me a lot of freedom and we are a good team. Together we want to advance interdisciplinary projects in the fields of music and art and strengthen cooperation with other institutions such as the Stolperdraht theater and the Karthausklub. “

It is exciting for them to participate in creative processes and to lead students to their limits and beyond. To implement this, she has wonderful colleagues at the school.

The school has made a name for itself with shows and exhibitions

Volker Rehberg says: “Lysann Vahrenhold has become a real Swede. She has developed a great passion for this city and our school. ”Rehberg is 58 years old and from 1974 was a student at the music school himself. In August 1989 he became director there and led the school through the turnaround and the 1990s. At that time the institution had to fight for its right to exist. He promoted the expansion of the music school to include art. The school has made a name for itself in Schwedt and the whole of the country with public appearances, concerts, shows and exhibitions.

The number of students has grown to 2,800

The school’s once 30 teachers have become 50 educators in the fields of music and art. Years ago teachers gave 500 lessons a week, now it is 820 hours. The number of students has grown from 1,100 to 2,800. The range of tasks has expanded to include early musical education in kindergartens. In addition, teachers from this school teach at Schwedt primary schools in the projects “Class: Music” and “Class: Art”.

Some subjects are so popular that there are waiting lists

Volker Rehberg says: “These projects are wonderful. They give all children equal access to arts education. No matter what financial options their parents have. ”Rehberg is an advocate that classes at music and art schools are generally free of charge for girls and boys. There is so much interest in some subjects that there are waiting lists. In ceramics / art, for example, the groups are full and there has been a waiting list for two years.
