“The Traitors’: British edition wins TV Baftas for Best Reality Program and Presenter Claudia Winkleman”

The British edition of The Traitors won two television Baftas, the UK’s top television award, last night. The originally Dutch program won the Best Reality Program category and presenter Claudia Winkleman was awarded.

In The Traitors In a Scottish castle, participants must find out which of them is the secret opponent who must eliminate the others. The winner can win £120,000. In contrast to the Dutch edition, no well-known names participate in the BBC version, but 22 ordinary Britons.

Winkleman, 51, thanked the BBC for taking a risk with the unusual format. “I said, ‘Just to be clear, we’re going to Scotland, wear cloaks, use the word murder, I have a turtleneck and use a ceremonial pouch. Is that okay? And they said, ‘Go have a good time.'”

The program has been broadcast in Great Britain since November last year. Winkleman previously confessed that she initially rejected the role as a presenter until she saw Dutch episodes.

“My kids weren’t fed, I didn’t brush my teeth anymore, I was watching and crying because I loved it so much,” she said in an interview. “All the other shows are about luck or general knowledge, but this one is about charm and savvy.”

The RTL format can now also be seen in other countries. France, for example, already has TraitorsNorway Traitor and in the US presents actor Alan Cumming The Traitors. Own editions will also be broadcast this year in Germany, New Zealand and Israel, among others.

The award ceremony in London last night also marked the final season of the comedy show Derry Girls distinguished, about teenage girls growing up during the Irish Troubles. The series won Best Comedy, Best Script and Best Actress for Siobhán McSweeney, who plays the role of a teacher nun.

“One of the last things my mother asked me on her deathbed in Cork was if I wouldn’t rather retrain to be a teacher,” McSweeney said. “If only she could see me now, now that I win a Bafta for playing a teacher. Nice puh.”

Kate Winslet won an actor’s award for I am Ruth, about a mother who tries to help her depressed daughter. She starred opposite her own child, Mia Threapleton, in the series. “I would have preferred to break this prize in half to give the other half to my daughter,” she said at the ceremony. “We did this together, kiddo.”

There were also awards for Ben Whishaw for the hospital series This is going to hurtthe Netflix series Dahmer and the BBC’s coverage of Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee last year.
