Perseid Meteor Shower 2023: Schedule, Phenomenon, and Safety

Surabaya – Meteor shower or meteor shower is a meteor phenomenon that falls and passes through the earth’s surface in large numbers. The following is the schedule for the Perseid Meteor Shower on August 12-13, 2023.

quoted Detik news from LAPAN BRIN, meteor showers can briefly occur because meteoroids enter the Earth’s atmosphere at high speed. Meanwhile, meteor is a term used to refer to something (space objects) that falls from outer space.

A Meteor Shower Occurs

Meteor showers start with rocks in outer space that meet the earth. The rock is a fragment of a comet that has disintegrated as well as different rocks in outer space.

Then the rock is attracted by the greater gravitational force of the earth. So that the rock meets and rubs against the earth’s atmosphere.

Friction that occurs in the earth’s atmosphere with rocks also causes pressure on these rocks, and will cause heat. One type of layer of the earth’s atmosphere, namely the mesosphere layer.

The heat generated by these rocks results in the appearance of fire or burning in these rocks. This is what can cause light resembling a shooting star. Because of the meteors that fall and light up, it is called a meteor shower.

It is called rain because usually there are more than one meteors that come from burning, scorched, and falling comet fragments. So it is more appropriate to call it a meteor shower.

Perseid Meteor Shower

The Perseid Meteor Shower will occur on August 12-13 2023. This is the first astronomical meteor shower phenomenon that will occur in early August this year.

Meteor showers are events where meteors fall and pass through the earth in large quantities that look like rain falling. Meteor showers are an interesting phenomenon to watch.

On the official Southern Sky website, it is explained that the Perseid Meteor Shower starts from July 14 to September 1, 2023. The Perseid Meteor Shower comes from comet Swift-Tuttle dust which will reach its peak on August 13, 2023.

On the peak night of the Perseid Meteor Shower, an estimated 100 meteors will pass every hour and appear to come from the constellation Perseus. For observation locations that are free of light pollution, observers can witness at least 50-75 meteors every hour.

Peak Timetable for the Perseid Meteor Shower

The new Perseus constellation rises at midnight, which is around 00:16 WIB from the northeast. Meanwhile, the crescent moon which rises early in the morning, which is around 03:30 WIB, is not a disturbing factor in hunting the Perseid Meteor Shower.

The Perseid Meteor Shower is a major meteor shower. The peak of the Perseid Meteor Shower on August 13 2023 has an intensity in Indonesia of 36 to 61 meteors per hour.

Dangerous Meteor Shower Phenomenon?

During a meteor shower, meteors fall toward Earth and interact with Earth’s atmosphere. But usually these falling meteors don’t reach the Earth’s surface.

That’s because the meteor was already burning when it passed through the earth’s atmosphere. So that the meteor shower phenomenon is not dangerous.
