Perseid Meteor Rain Peak Night August 12, Record the Time and Direction

SUKABUMIUPDATE.com – Astronomical phenomena this month will be enlivened by the Perseid meteor shower. The peak night occurs August 12, 2020. “It is estimated that 100 meteors will pass every hour,” said Avivah Yamani, an astronomy activist in the Langit Selatan community of Bandung, Saturday, August 8, 2020.

Reporting from Tempo.co, the meteor shower will emerge from the constellation Perseus. According to Avivah, the Perseus constellation will only appear at midnight, precisely at 12:18 WIB from the northeast or between north and east.

Derived from the comet dust of Swift-Tuttle, the Perseid meteor shower has been going on from July 17 to August 24. Observers in light-free locations, Avivah said, cannot see up to 100 meteors per hour on peak nights. “At least 50-75 meteors every hour,” he said.

According to him there are other hindering factors in the observation. The last quarter moon, which just rises at midnight, will coincide with the constellation Perseus. “This condition will be a major light pollution factor in meteor hunting,” said the ITB astronomy graduate.

In addition, quoting from the Southern Sky page, the planets Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn can be seen directly by the naked eye in the night sky during August. Venus aka Morning Star appears at 03.00 WIB while Mars starts at midnight. The two giant planets Jupiter and Saturn can be observed until past midnight.

At the end of August there is another hunt as the moon moves into a new moon phase. Observers can watch the Milky Way Galaxy from midnight. The galaxy will be seen stretching from the northeast to the southwest.
