Artistic Director of the Moscow Gypsy Theater “Romen” Nikolai Slichenko died at the age of 87, according to the website of the theater. He was the only representative of his people awarded the title of People’s Artist of the USSR. svoboda.org.
Slichenko was born in 1934 in a camp in the Kursk region. At the age of seven, his father was shot by the Nazis in front of him, he said. At the age of 16, in 1951 he entered the troupe of the “Romen” theater, since 1977 he became its head. In the theater, in the cinema and on stage, he performed gypsy songs and old romances.
He took an active part in the life of the Roma people in Russia, was awarded a number of state awards of Russia and the State Prize of the USSR.
