People who live in polluted areas are more at risk of getting diabetes

JawaPos.com – One of the risks of a person getting diabetes is if he lives in an environment with air pollution, said dr. Rudy Kurniawan, Sp.PD from the Indonesian Association of Internal Medicine Specialists (PAPDI).

“Air pollution can increase the risk of diabetes through the mechanism of increasing oxidative stress, chronic inflammation,” he said, referring to research published in the journal Therapeutic Advances in Endocrinology and Metabolism in 2019, Friday (8/4).

Rudy, who is also the Founder of the Sobat Diabet Community, said that pollutants can interfere with glucose and insulin metabolism and can even interfere with body fat metabolism.

The relationship between air pollution and diabetes risk was also strengthened by the findings of a study in the journal Lancet Planetary Health in July 2018 and Diabetes no July 2017. Increased air pollution increases risk factors for type 2 diabetes such as decreased insulin sensitivity and decreased insulin production in overweight and obese children.

As Rudy explains, pollution carries fine particles, including metals and other toxins. Some experts hypothesize that inflammation due to fine particles in air pollution increases the risk of type 2 diabetes. On the other hand, Alderete suspects that air pollution alters the gut in unhealthy ways and this could potentially contribute to type 2 diabetes.

He emphasized that air pollution alone does not cause diabetes but is a constellation of risk factors that include poor diet, less physical activity plus greater exposure to environmental toxins.
