Investigators found a handgun at the station. They also found smoke bombs and other items, which are currently being investigated. Officers are said to be looking for a van with Arizona license plates.
“There was smoke, blood and people screaming,” an eyewitness told a local radio station. Another witness saw many people panicking from another metro station. “It was idiotic,” he told AP news agency. “Nobody knew exactly what was going on.”

Police are still looking for a black, heavyset man wearing a green safety vest. He has not yet been identified. People have been asked to avoid the vicinity of the station. Schools in the area are closed: no one is allowed on the street and only students are allowed into the buildings.
Metro traffic in the area has been shut down. Police are present at many other metro stations in the area. Emergency services are on the scene en masse.
President Biden and the US Attorney General have been informed of the matter. There is also contact between the White House and the authorities in New York.
