Birthday of the church
On Whit Monday, May 24th, Vicar General Andreas Sturm celebrates Holy Mass at 10 a.m. The Schola der Dommusik and cathedral organist Eichenlaub take care of the musical design. The Missa in C by Robert Jones will be heard. Further masses are on Pentecost Sunday and Monday at 7.30 a.m. and 6 p.m., respectively.
Pentecost is the feast of the sending of the Holy Spirit, which ends the 50 days of Easter. According to church teaching, the Holy Spirit was sent into the world to keep the person, word and work of Jesus Christ alive. The period of 50 days was taken from the Jewish tradition. “Pentecost” is derived from “pentekoste”, the Greek term for “fifty”. The book of Acts states that the Holy Spirit was poured out on the apostles and disciples as they gathered in Jerusalem to celebrate the “Jewish festival of Pentecost”. A roar filled the house.
Unity of believers
The event drew crowds from many different regions, and everyone heard the disciples speak in their own native language. Whitsun is thus, so to speak, the counterpart to the Tower of Babel: the miracle of cross-border understanding. From that moment on, the disciples understood themselves as God’s people and the Holy Spirit had created the unity of the believers. That is why Pentecost is considered the birthday of the Church.
