Penelope Cruz and the Albanian-British singer Dua Lipa will be part of the select group of hosts of the next Met Galatogether with the Swiss tennis player Roger Federer, the British actress Micaela Cole and the American fashion editor Anna Wintour, the brains of the event.
The Met Gala, which will be held on may 1is the annual benefit event of the Fashion Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of New York (Met) but beyond that it is quite a social event for celebrities, who are inspired when dressing in the theme of the great spring exhibition of the institution.
The exhibition will focus on the legacy of the late German designer Karl Lagerfeld and the gala is financed, among others, by his eponymous firm and by Chanel, the house where he led the creative baton for 36 years, so the chosen dress code is not surprising: “In honor of Karl”, as announced this Wednesday the museum.
This code leaves no doubt about its interpretation and suggests that the red carpet will become a tribute to Lagerfeld’s designs and his vision of fashion, so closely linked to the emblematic French brand founded by Coco Chaneland which he previously applied to other large firms such as Chloé and Fendi.
Penélope Cruz, who has been the face of Chanel and shared a long friendship with Lagerfeld, was one of the leading muses on the designer’s farewell catwalk after his death in 2019, at the age of 85, and reacted to his role as hostess on Instagram with a message with Karl’s name and a heart emoji.
Anna Wintour, the editor of Vogue magazine, has directed the Met Gala for almost 30 years and selects the hundreds of guests at the event, who later have to pay a large entrance fee and, in many cases, are accompanied by fashion designers and wear their creations in a sort of sponsorship.
