Penalty points for traffic violations will be introduced in Ukraine: how they are proposed to be charged

From 2022, Ukraine plans to return penalty points for traffic violations… With such an initiative previously spoke at the Ministry of Internal Affairs, and now a group of people’s deputies has submitted a corresponding draft law to the Verkhovna Rada №6502.

The bill proposes to accrue penalty points for traffic violations along with fines – as in the United States and many EU countries. Recall that until 2020, points were written off instead of a fine and allowed to avoid punishment.

For what traffic violations in Ukraine penalty points will be awarded:

• 1 point – for not wearing a seat belt or transporting children without a car seat;
• 2 points – for driving a faulty vehicle with closed numbers, transporting children without a car seat (again), driving on a red traffic light, exceeding the set speed by more than 20 km / h (except for violations recorded in automatic mode);
• 3 points – for violation of traffic rules and stopping on the lane for route vehicles, driving a faulty vehicle that is used to provide passenger transportation services;
• 5 points – for exceeding the speed by more than 50 km / h or creating an emergency.

If a driver collects 12 or more points (and a newcomer who obtained a license less than a year ago – 8 or more points), then the National Police will decide to temporarily suspend his driver’s license. It will be possible to restore them only after re-passing the theoretical and practical exams at the Ministry of Internal Affairs. It is also noted that the number of points will be reset annually.
