In the Consultation Committee (the body that brings together the federal government and the state governments), the Prime Minister of our country, Alexander De Croo, sits around the table with the regional Prime Ministers and the Ministers of the Interior, Foreign Affairs and Health. These are Annelies Verlinden (CD&V), Sophie Wilmès (MR) and Frank Vandenbroucke (SP.A) respectively.
In the past, the Consultation Committee often prepared the Security Council, but now there is no prospect of the next Security Council. The Consultation Committee can take certain urgent decisions itself. For example, the Consultation Committee decided that face masks would be mandatory in shops, created the famous “color codes” for travel destinations, and in April the meeting decided that the military could provide assistance in residential care centers. The difference seems to be minimal, because there are often the same people in both organs. A Consultation Committee is a purely political body, experts may be invited to a Security Council to give advice. The Security Council was created after the attacks.
