‘Pediatricians want to ban homeopathic therapy that would cure autism’

Monday, 21.September 2020 – 10:20 AM

Research by De Monitor shows that about a hundred homeopaths openly offer such therapy. It is estimated that about a thousand children undergo this every year.

“A homeopathic therapy that claims to cure autism should be banned.” That says pediatrician Karoly Illy, chairman of the NVK tonight in De Monitor. “Autism cannot be cured. If it is claimed that it can be cured by any kind of therapy, then that is quackery. ” Illy finds offering such a therapy harmful to children, because they are denied good care and good guidance.

The editors of Monitor counted around a hundred Dutch websites on which homeopathic therapists openly say they can treat or cure autism. The most commonly mentioned treatment is called CEASE therapy, which stands for complete elimination or autistic spectrum expression. The editors spoke to a quarter of these therapists. Together they say they give this therapy to about 400 children a year. A conservative estimate would amount to more than a thousand children per year for the hundred providers found.

Children’s Ombudsman Margrite Kalverboer also wants practitioners to be prohibited from claiming that they can cure children. Tonight in De Monitor she says: “Saying: ‘I can cure you of autism’ is extremely harmful. And if you say, “Should that therapy be banned?” That aspect should be banned anyway. ”

Following Illy, there are 15 more scientists in the fields of autism, development or pharmacology and a number of organizations for a ban on CEASE Therapy for minors. The names are listed at the bottom of the press release.

Tonight Elijah Delsink can be seen in De Monitor, a 17-year-old student with classic autism, who wants this therapy to be banned. He has conducted his own research into these practices and has drawn up a manifesto that he presents to State Secretary Blokhuis of VWS.
