“Justice for Check”, chanted the demonstrators while parading in the center of Dijon at the call of the family and organizations such as Solidaires and the League of Human Rights, noted an AFP journalist.

“We want to know what happened. We want answers, ”Allassanne Doumbia, the uncle of Check Camara who hosted the young man who arrived in France as a teenager, told the press.

Found in the Burgundy Canal

Check Camara’s body was found on July 10 in a section of the Canal de Burgundy along the center of Dijon. Three days earlier, on July 7, the young man allegedly had an altercation with one or more people, according to his uncle.

At the police station would then have “pursued” the young Ivorian, according to the uncle. A video, posted on social networks, shows Check Camara walking on the banks of the L’Ouche river, not far from the canal, while being followed by two police officers posted on a bridge.

“Nothing” calls into question the police “as is”

The family’s lawyer, Jean-Baptiste Gavignet, told AFP that a complaint against X for “failure to provide assistance” had been filed. The prosecution confirmed the filing of the complaint but indicated that, “as it stands, there was nothing to implicate the police services”.

The prosecution did not want to specify whether the autopsy had confirmed or invalidated the thesis of drowning and whether there had been blows and injuries.

“We expect exemplary work from justice,” Dieynaba Baldé, president of SOS Racisme Côte d’Or, told AFP. “All the rights of these young people must be respected,” she added. “There are too many gray areas. There was a chase. We would like to know what happened, ”insisted Anne Varnaton, marching in the pink vest of the Solidaires union.
