Paul Merson urges Cristiano Ronaldo to leave Man United

Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson believes Cristiano Ronaldo has every reason to leave Manchester United this summer. While Erik ten Hag is eager to start working with the Portuguese ace and the same could be said for the striker, Merson suggests it’s not the best course for either side.

In his column for the Daily Star, the former Arsenal player believes that Cristiano Ronaldo should have joined his eternal rival Lionel Messi at Paris Saint-Germain (PSG). He believes Manchester United’s new chapter under Ten Hag will not begin until the veteran striker leaves the club.

merson wrote:

“Ronaldo should have gone to Paris Saint-Germain to form a dream team with Lionel Messi this summer – because Erik ten Hag’s revolution cannot start until Cristiano Ronaldo leaves Manchester United, in my opinion . »
The prospect of the two legends teaming up is surely tantalizing and has been hinted at in recent years by fans and pundits alike. Indeed, a club like PSG is capable of having two of the greatest footballers of all time on its payroll at the same time.

Merson believes that by joining the Ligue 1 giants, the Portuguese would have at least had the opportunity to add trophies to his tally. The pundit doesn’t see the Red Devils winning a single silver coin in Erik ten Hag’s debut season.

“And Ronaldo doesn’t win the title at Old Trafford, so why stay anyway? He doesn’t have many years left to win the big prizes. Imagine him at PSG with Messi. They spent years being rivals. It would be fun to see them end their careers as teammates. »

However, with Luis Campos as the Parisians’ new sporting director and the project revolving around Kylian Mbappé, Cristiano Ronaldo’s move from Manchester United to PSG wouldn’t have made sense.

The 37-year-old striker has proven critics wrong throughout his career and he could well guide the Red Devils to a trophy this season to prove Merson wrong.
