Amazement in the Cominese entity where the two bosses of SA Taveirne were discovered dead, victims of a dysfunction.

On Wednesday August 19, a tragedy took place in a pigsty on the Route de Neuve-Église, operated by SA Taveirne.

According to our sources, Patrick and Ann Taveirne were busy working alone in one of their pigsties. The operator used a device that mixes the slurry so that it is less compact. It seems that, following a technical defect, a large quantity of ammonia was released; toxic gases not having been regularly evacuated.

Seized with discomfort, the pig fattener fell. His wife Ann Decleir intervened, presumably trying to move him outside, but she too was a victim of the deadly gas.

Shortly after 12 noon, their eldest daughter, Margot, discovered her lifeless parents and tried to save them; it was unfortunately already too late. Arrived on the spot, the emergency services could only note the sad evidence.

Even though verifications have yet to be carried out, the Tournai prosecutor’s office has confirmed that the deaths are linked to faulty ventilation.

A great commercial success

Patrick and Ann Taveirne lived in a house behind the site of the Route de Neuve-Église. Patrick was the only son of Rémi (deceased in 2017) and Agnes Vandewynckel. His parents, originally from the region of Dixmude, had started pig farming, rue du Petit Pont in Ploegsteert, at the end of the 1950s. From extension to extension, the Taveirne family had become one of the main producers of pork meat from Wallonia, regularly provoking outcry from the population because of the nuisance of their facilities.

Patrick Taveirne, born in Ypres on March 24, 1961, was involved in the Last Post committee and in the activities of the La Hutte district. Behind the sometimes disparaged business leaders hid two naturally affable and sympathetic people.

The couple had two daughters: Margot and Katrien and had recently had the joy of welcoming a first grandchild. We extend our sincere condolences to the whole family.
