Passenger with symptoms of coronavirus stops train at Entroncamento

The international train “Sud Express” was stopped at Entroncamento station, in the district of Santarém, after a passenger claimed to have symptoms of infection with the new coronavirus.

“This is a passenger from China who went to the reviewer with suspicion of being infected,” a PSP source in Santarém told Lusa, adding that she received the alert at about 11:35 pm.

Questioned by Lusa, the Santarém District Emergency Operations Command confirmed only that it received the alert for the stop of an international train at that station at about 23.30 hours.

The CP communication office confirmed that the train stopped at that station due to “a passenger who felt bad”, adding that the interruption of circulation in these circumstances is “habitual”, without, however, relating the situation to a possible infection.

According to the newspaper “Expresso”, which cites the general director of Health, Graça Freitas, the passenger in question was removed from the train to be transferred to the hospital and to perform screening tests, and all passengers will be signaled.

“The situation is being monitored by the local and national health authority. The people concerned will be taken to a hospital to detect the situation,” said Graça Freitas. “We will also act accordingly in relation to all the occupants of the train, as they may have been in direct contact with a possible contaminant, if confirmed positive”, added the director-general of Health, in the statements to that weekly.

Portugal without confirmed positive cases

In the last 24 hours, Portugal registered 15 new suspected cases of infection with the new coronavirus, increasing the total to 85, of which 73 were negative and the remaining 12 are awaiting results, saccording to data from the Directorate-General for Health (DGS), at 8 pm on Sunday.

DGS maintains moderate to high the risk to public health in Portugal and reiterates that, “taking into account the global epidemiological situation, it is necessary to consider the possibility of importing cases of illness from citizens from China or other areas with community transmission active “, namely from Italy, Iran, Singapore, Japan and South Korea.

The Covid-19 outbreak, detected in December in China and which can cause respiratory infections such as pneumonia, caused at least 2,980 deaths and infected more than 87,000 people, according to data reported by 60 countries. Of the infected people, over 41,000 recovered.

In addition to 2,873 deaths in China, there are fatalities in Iran, Italy, South Korea, Japan, France, Taiwan, Australia, Thailand, the United States of America and the Philippines.

A Portuguese crew member of a cruise ship is hospitalized in Japan with confirmation of infection. Adriano Maranhão, who was hospitalized after accusing Covid-19 of being positive, was discharged from hospital and will now return to Portugal.

The World Health Organization (WHO) declared the Covid-19 outbreak as an international public health emergency and increased the risk to “very high”.
