Hang Seo at a press conference ahead of the 2022 VFF Tri Nations Series tournament on Tuesday (9/20) admitted to being open to player naturalization. Provided the player has Vietnamese origins and citizenship.

“If the player has Vietnamese roots and has Vietnamese citizenship, he can become a player of the Vietnamese national team. I don’t know how many such players play out. The VFF doesn’t have much information to give. If there is, I’ll find out for myself.” said Hang Seo quoted by Soha.

Hang Seo refused to follow the steps previously taken by Indonesia and Malaysia, who had naturalized national team players without blood or descent from their respective countries.

Previously, the Indonesian national team had naturalized players such as Cristian Gonzales, Beto Goncalves and Victor Igbonefo who did not have Indonesian blood. While Malaysia has naturalized players such as Mohamadou Sumareh and Guilherme de Paula.

But lately Indonesia, through PSSI, has been focusing more on naturalizing players of Indonesian blood and must rely on the recommendation of coach Shin Tae Yong. PSSI is currently in the process of naturalizing Sandy Walsh, Jordi Amat and Shayne Pattynama.

“Currently several teams [ASEAN] they are actively naturalizing. I think naturalization has its advantages and disadvantages. I can’t tell if I like it or not, “Hang Seo said.

“We have to follow the rules of the government, if the government allows it, we have to take them into account. But football is a team sport. I can not only lead the player, but I also have to see if the player can integrate with the Vietnamese culture and spirit.” Hang Seo said.

Additionally, the South Korean manager said he no longer actively monitors Vietnamese-born players playing overseas.

“Among the Vietnamese players abroad, I have most of the information only from the goalkeepers who play in the Czech Republic [Filip Nguyen]. I often went to Norway to see Vietnam-born players [Alexandre Dang]but now it’s rare, “Hang Seo said.

Vietnam will face Singapore and India in the 2022 VFF Tri Nations Series this week.
