Paris-Nice: Bennett wins – Ackermann third, Bauhaus missed the podium

On Thursday, too, there was nothing with Pascal Ackermann’s longed-for first win of the season. The German sprinter came third in the victory of Irishman Sam Bennett, while Phil Bauhaus just missed the podium in fourth.

Sprinter Pascal Ackermann continues to pursue his first victory in the 2021 cycling season. On Thursday, on the fifth stage of the traditional Paris-Nice tour over 200.2 kilometers from Vienne to Bollène, the man from Palatinate took third place behind the Irish winner of the day Sam Bennett and the French Nacer Bouhanni. Fourth was Phil Bauhaus from Bocholt.

Chess man makes seconds up

In the overall standings, Ackermann’s team-mate and last year’s winner Maximilian Schachmann was able to catch up two seconds on leader Primoz Roglic in second. Thanks to the bonus seconds in the intermediate sprint, the Berliner is now 31 seconds behind the Slovenian Tour de France runner-up in the overall standings. American Brandon McNulty is still third, 37 seconds back.

Rising corona numbers: bike races are prohibited in Nice

On Friday, the sixth stage from Brignoles to Biot continues over 202.4 kilometers. Then the ASO organization has to come up with something. Because the last two stages cannot be held as planned over the weekend. The prefecture of the Alpes-Maritimes department, in which Nice is located, has tightened the measures again due to rising corona numbers and accordingly banned cycle races. How the race will be brought to an end has not yet been decided. The OSA wants to discuss with the authorities.

Corona had already thwarted the organizers’ bill last year. At that time, the last stage to Nice was canceled after the outbreak of the pandemic.
