Storm and rain could not prevent more than 50 girls, boys and their parents on Saturday (March 13th) from flying the flag in front of the town hall for the preservation of the expanded school district Veerßen.

Uelzen – It’s stormy, it’s wet – and yet more than 50 children, parents and officials gather on Saturday morning on the Uelzener Herzogenplatz to demonstrate for the maintenance of the Veerßen elementary school as a half-day school and against the closure of the expanded Veerßen school district.

In a week – in the council meeting on Monday, March 22nd from 6.30 p.m. – the final decision should be made. The administrative committee of the Hanseatic City of Uelzen will also deal with this topic in a closed session on Monday (March 15) from 3 p.m. The AZ captured votes as part of the protest on Saturday.

“Withdraw application for container or extension”

Sandra Ohst (Chairwoman of the School Parents’ Council of the Veerßen primary school): “We are really very concerned that our school will be closed when the number of pupils falls because the business would then no longer be economically viable. That would only be avoidable by preserving the expanded district. Our wish is to keep the Veerßen elementary school with a suitable number of pupils. “

Wiebke Köpp (CDU candidate for mayor, who herself has a son in the first grade in Veerßen): “The situation actually started through a warning message regarding a current shortage of space. However, this is no longer acute at all. Therefore, the proposal to the administration for an extension or a container would have to be withdrawn. In the case of a half-day school operation, all those children who need a full-day offer for various reasons are eliminated anyway. “

“Happiest children in the small schools”

Ilse Warnecke-Schulz (Retired teacher): “I have taught at several schools in Uelzen and in the district, including the Veerßen school. My experience says that the happiest children have always been those in the small schools. It is immensely important for social learning that you know each other. This creates a personal environment and ensures that the students develop well. “

Hinrich Heuer (Farmer from Veerßen): “Five years ago the city council and mayor promised that the status quo would not be shaken. Many young families then moved to Veerßen to give their children a carefree start to school. If that were simply broken, that would not be a good testimony for those responsible. “

“Do not decide against the wish of the Veerßer”

Karl-Heinz Günther (CDU city council member and mayor of Westerweyhe): “There is currently a stalemate in the city council about how to proceed. If it stays that way, the decision is left to the mayor alone. Under no circumstances should a decision be made against the votes of the students, parents, teachers, the school board, the local council, i.e. actually against the wishes of the entire Veerßer citizens. If the school dies, the village dies too. In the interests of the children and parents, we should work together to preserve the small primary schools in the city. ”- by Oliver Huchthausen
