American rock band Paramore has announced their rejection of any acknowledgements or honors from the Tennessee House, following a recent controversy regarding singer/songwriter Allison Russell. Paramore accuses the Tennessee House of Representatives, led by Republicans, of displaying blatant racism by objecting to a resolution honoring Russell’s Grammy win.
Tennessee Republicans Face Backlash Over Pausing Resolution
The controversy arose when the House Republican Caucus Chair, Rep. Jeremy Faison (R-Tenn.), put a hold on the resolution honoring Russell. Faison stated that he received several queries from fellow members regarding the individual, leading to the decision to temporarily pause the resolution while further investigation was conducted.

Paramore, the winners of two Grammys at the recent 2024 awards, have decided to delay their acceptance of Tennessee’s state honors until Allison Russell is granted the same recognition for her achievements.

Paramore frontwoman, Haley Williams, publicly denounced what she referred to as the “blatant racism of our state leadership.” Williams further described the Tennessee House’s actions as “embarrassing and cruel.” She pledged to continue encouraging young people to vote with equality in mind.

Allison Russell, born in Montreal but now residing in Nashville, garnered recognition for her Best American Roots Performance Grammy-winning single, “Eve Was Black.” Haley Williams praised Russell as an incredibly talented artist, emphasizing the significance of her contributions to the music industry.
