Nuremberg, June 2, 2020. In May, motorists in Germany continued to fill up cheaply. Although the prices for Super E10 and Diesel rose slightly in the course of the month, the bliss month has so far been the cheapest tank month of the year and also marks record lows. This emerges from the monthly evaluation of the Clever Tanken consumer information service. “The historical turmoil on the international crude oil exchanges in April continued to have an impact into May. The crude oil prices have now caught up again. On the one hand, they are far from the quotes from before the onset of the Corona crisis. On the other hand, changes in crude oil prices usually have a delayed effect on the pumps, “explains Steffen Bock, founder and managing director of Clever Tanken.

According to the evaluation by Clever Tanken, a liter of Super E10 cost EUR 1.1673 on a nationwide average in May. This was only 0.18 cents less than in April (1.1691 euros), but at the same time it is the lowest value since the regular evaluation of the consumer information service began in January 2013. Until the price drop in April this year had the lowest value in February 2016 with 1.1835 euros.

In May, drivers paid an average of 280.15 euros for four tank fillings of 60 liters of Super E10 each. That was around 43 cents less than in April and around 55.34 euros less than in January, the most expensive tank month of the year so far.

A liter of diesel cost an average of 1.0481 euros in May. The fuel was last cheaper in April 2016 at EUR 1.0221. The price fell by around 3 cents compared to April this year and by 25 cents per liter compared to January. Four tank fillings of 60 liters of diesel cost an average of 251.54 euros in May. That was around 7.49 euros less than in April and 58.90 euros less than in January.

Gasoline-diesel scissors open again

The price difference between Super E10 and Diesel increased again in May. It was EUR 0.1192 per liter. Compared to the previous month (0.0898 euros), the petrol-diesel scissors have increased by an average of almost 3 cents. In April, it contracted by 4 cents compared to March (0.1292 euros).

Cheapest and most expensive tank day

The cheapest were Super E10 and Diesel at the beginning of the month, the most expensive at the end of the month. The cheapest fuel day for both types of fuel was Tuesday May 5th. On this day, the liter of Super E10 in the national average cost 1.1330 euros, and 1.0360 euros the liter of diesel.

The most expensive, however, was Super E10 on Saturday, May 30th with 1.1940 euros. The most expensive diesel tank day was Thursday, May 28th with 1.0620 euros.

City ranking: Nuremberg is the cheapest petrol and diesel tank city, Bremen the most expensive

The monthly price comparison of Clever Tanken’s 20 largest German cities in Nuremberg was chosen as the cheapest Super E10 fuel city in May. The liter a month here averaged 1.1230 euros. Mannheim (1.1388 euros) and Munich (1.1524 euros) followed in second and third place.

However, drivers paid the most for the liter Super E10 in Bremen (1.1991 euros), Dortmund and Frankfurt am Main (both 1.1829 euros) and Düsseldorf (1.1818 euros).

Four tank fillings of 60 liters of Super E10 thus cost around 287.78 euros in expensive Bremen – around 18.26 euros more than in cheap Nuremberg.

As in the price ranking for Super E10, Nuremberg also took pole position in May when comparing the cheapest diesel cities. The liter cost 1.0199 euros here. Leipzig (1.0234 euros) and Bonn (1.0279 euros) followed in second and third place.

Likewise, there was no difference in the title award for the most expensive diesel fueling cities compared to the comparison of the most expensive Super E10 fueling cities. Bremen also stood out here with the highest prices. The Bremen residents paid an average of 1.0753 euros per liter. Behind Bremen came Berlin (1.0553 euros) and Düsseldorf (1.0518 euros).

Fuel prices pick up in June

For June, expert Steffen Bock expects fuel prices to rise, but will remain at a low average level. “The strict lock-down regulations are relaxing almost worldwide. The economy is stimulated, daycare centers and schools open and many employees return to their regular jobs from their home office. This increases the demand for crude oil. In addition, prices have been supported since the beginning of May by cutbacks in the Opec oil cartel and the countries allied to it. Nevertheless, the global economy and thus also the demand for crude oil are far from the situation before the Corona crisis. The oil stores are full. And the euro regained value against the US dollar in May, making the purchase of crude oil traded in US dollars cheap in this country, “explains Bock.

Not only with a view to the summer vacation, which starts in six federal states in June, does Bock recommend that motorists compare the fuel prices along their planned route via app, navigation device or the Internet, even in the low-price phase. This way they save even at low prices and boost competition among providers. You should note the sometimes huge jumps in the course of the day and between the providers. Favorable fueling times are often between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m., 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. and from 6 p.m. in the evening.
