Panic after volcanic eruption on Java: at least one dead, local residents on the run | Abroad

Local TV images and social media show people running away in panic as an ash cloud approaches. Streets and houses are covered with a layer of ash and mud. A hospital in a nearby village reports that it has received at least ten people with burns. The Ministry of Health has promised to send medical aid troops.

The Australian KNMI warns that ash can be ejected into the atmosphere up to 15,000 meters. This could have consequences for air traffic.

The more than 3600 meters high Semeru in East Java has erupted several times in the past year. Indonesia is located in the ‘ring of fire’, an area in the Pacific Ocean with almost 130 active volcanoes, where many earthquakes also occur.
