Weather code red has been issued for fifteen Italian cities because of the heat that is expected there today. It reports that Ministry of Health. Weather warnings have been in place in Italy for several days due to the heat. Tomorrow sixteen cities will be on red.

Extreme temperatures are expected in the tourist areas of Rome and Florence. Code red also applies in Bari, Bologna, Cagliari, Campobasso, Catania, Civitavecchia, Frosinone, Latina, Messina, Perugia, Pescara, Rieti and Viterbo. Palermo will be added tomorrow.

The authorities warn for “possible negative effects on the health of healthy and active people and not only in high-risk groups such as the elderly, very young children and the chronically ill”. It is advised to stay out of the sun as much as possible between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. and to avoid busy areas.

Temperatures of around 40 degrees are expected across the country, with peaks of 45 degrees and above. The heat will continue to rise after the weekend. Tuesday and Wednesday are likely to be the hottest days, the public reports broadcaster RAI. At night the temperature will not fall below 20 degrees.

Warning in Greece

The Greek authorities also warn about the heat. The temperature will also exceed 40 degrees there, with peaks of up to 43 degrees. It is advised to drink plenty of water and to stay in the shade as much as possible, Greek media report.

People with heavy occupations are not allowed to work during the heat of the day, between noon and 5 p.m. According to the fire service, the risk of forest fires is very high.

The highest temperature ever recorded in Europe is 48.8 degrees. That was in August 2021 on the Italian island of Sicily. Weather services expect that record to be matched in the coming days.
