Pandemic effect: Jetsmart displaces Sky from second place in the domestic air market

The pandemic is causing changes in the national airline industry. The airlines have resumed their operations after activity was reduced to its minimum capacity due to the closure of borders and severe travel restrictions. But, in addition, the biggest crisis in the history of commercial aviation has brought with it changes in domestic market shares.

According to the latest report from the Civil Aeronautics Board (JAC), 122,793 passengers were transported within Chile in July, with a 90.7% drop compared to the same period in 2019. Of that total, Jetsmart carried 31,905 passengers last month and achieved a 26% share of the air market on domestic flights. Meanwhile, Sky mobilized 26,768 people and kept 21.8% of the pie.

Latam Airlines, for its part, transported 61,289 passengers, reaching a weight of 49.9% in the market.

Low-cost airlines – also known as low cost – were more resilient and, in some cases, reduced their offer to a lesser level than traditional ones.

In the case of Jetsmart, the airline continued to fly uninterrupted during the pandemic, although with fewer frequencies. During July, the company increased the operation to 17 domestic routes. Sky went almost three months without domestic flights. In June it resumed operations with six national destinations and in August Sky added new route reactivations, reaching eight active national destinations. This could bring about changes in market shares this month.

Monthly evolution

During the first week of July compared to the last of the same month, a 12.8% increase was observed in the number of passengers transported.

Specific, domestic air transport grew 15.4% if the first week of July is compared to the last, while international transport fell by 5.6% in the same period of analysis.

The average number of passengers transported daily for July was 42,604 and 32,236 people on national and international flights, respectively.
