Panda cub in Rhenen gets name: these are the choices | Inland

One of the five possible names, Fan Xing, refers to Van Gogh, the most famous Dutch painter in China. Fan stands for Fan Gao (Van Gogh) and Xing means star. Fan Xing is starry sky in Chinese, an ode to the famous painting The Starry Night.

Other possible names are Xing He (milky way, which stands for clarity), He Shun (harmony, a symbol for the birth of the first panda in the Netherlands), Dan Qing (painting, symbol for friendly exchange between the Netherlands and China) and He Kang (healthy, happy, symbol of cooperation). The word He in three names is short for Helan, which means the Netherlands in Chinese.

All proposed names are gender neutral, because it is not yet known whether the little panda is a male or female. This will only become apparent when the young leaves the maternity den with the mother. Ouwehands expects the bear to be seen outside the farrowing pen for the first time in October. People who vote for a name on the zoo’s website have a chance to be present at the animal’s first public steps.
