Pakistan / Karachi stock market attack: at least six dead (police)

At least six people were killed in an attack carried out on Monday by four armed men against the Stock Exchange of Karachi (South), the financial capital of Pakistan, announced the police.

“Four guards and one civilian were killed,” as well as a police officer, “in a terrorist grenade and rifle attack” against the Karachi Stock Exchange, the police said in a statement.

The Edhi foundation, the main relief organization in Karachi, for its part reported seven dead and as many injured, according to its official Faisal Edhi. The four attackers were also killed.

The attack on the Karachi Stock Exchange comes ten days after a grenade was thrown in a queue outside a welfare office, killing one person and injuring eight others.

No group had claimed responsibility for the attack. After a bloody decade, during which the attacks were daily, violence has dropped very sharply in Pakistan.

The port city of Karachi, which for years has been hit by heavy crime, is now much safer after the territory is taken over by the security forces.
