New Delhi – Padmaja Venugopal, daughter of former Chief Minister and Congress leader K. Karunakaran, has joined the BJP. She accepted the party membership at a function held at the BJP National Headquarters. The membership reception was attended by leaders including Prakash Javadekar, who is in charge of Kerala.

Both of them reached the BJP residence after holding a discussion at Javadekar’s house. Padmaja Venugopal told the media that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is a strong leader and that is why he is joining the BJP. She said that she had been estranged from Congress for a long time.
“There’s a lot of joy and a little bit of tension. Congress has been estranged from the leadership for several years now. Especially after the last assembly elections. A complaint was made to the High Command but no response was received. He came many times to discuss with the leadership but was not allowed to do so. My father also had the same experience from Congress.

They were only asked to act peacefully. All parties need strong leadership. Congress does not have that. Sonia Gandhi has a lot of respect. But he was never allowed to meet them. This has also been said to journalists. That’s why this decision was made. Must learn about this party. Modiji is a strong leader. That’s why I came to this party.” – said Padmaja.

Padmaja clashed with the Congress when the district leaders prevented Padmaja from riding in Priyanka Gandhi’s vehicle during the last assembly election campaign rally. Padmaja contested the Thrissur constituency in the last assembly elections but did not win. Padmaja lost in 2016 assembly elections and 2004 Lok Sabha elections. It is indicated that Padmaja also influenced the decision to build K. Karunakaran’s memorial and the delay of the Congress.
