ÖVP counterattack: Blümel’s budget breakdown had already happened to SPÖ

At first it looks like a banal one Sloppiness errorthat can happen to anyone. And yet it is a process that goes deep into the secret science of law, i.e. the highly complex legislation with its relatively complex coordination processes.

What happened?

After much opposition criticism of the number quality of the budget, which resulted in a motion of no confidence by the opposition against finance ministers Gernot Blümel (ÖVP) culminated if the federal budget for 2020 was finally decided on Thursday evening. The budget had been the subject of heated arguments in the days before. At the end of the debate, it was a really turbulent day in the House.

Shortly before the final vote, SPÖ financial spokesmen discovered Kai Jan Krainer a relatively embarrassing mistake by the Treasury: Because with a table of Blümels crucial two and a half page Amendment request, which had only been delivered on Wednesday night and the phrase “Amounts in millions of euros” was missing, the federal government should have only spent 102,000 euros this year instead of the intended 102 billion euros.

Obviously, the reference to the millions had slipped through a copy error when replacing the table in the final version, but no one in the ministry or ÖVP club noticed it.
