For the introduction of the new generation F1 machine, the 2022 F1 World Championship saw a 31% increase in overtaking.
The 2022 F1 season has been dubbed the ‘new era’ of F1 as new F1 regulations have been introduced with the aim of improving overtaking and allowing cars to follow more closely.
According to Pirelli statistics, the 2021 season saw 599 overtakings in the final round of the Abu Dhabi F1 GP.
After the same number of races in 2022, this number rises to 785. This corresponds to a 31% increase in overtaking on the track.
Mario Isola of Pirelli F1 says he is satisfied with the results of the new regulation.

The tires have allowed F1 drivers to race closer together, creating more opportunities for split strategies, but Mario Isola says F1 will increase the chances of wheel-to-wheel battles during a single lap due to regulation changes and said he has achieved its goal.
“It’s not just the number of overtakings that proves we’ve had a good season,” continued Mario Isola.
“If you look at a lot of races, not just the front runners but also the midfield drivers struggled with two or three.”
“They were overtaking each other, taking advantage of every chance or mistake from their rivals to overtake, pushing 3, 4 or 5 laps instead of 1 corner.
“That’s the biggest difference we’ve seen this year compared to the past.”
