As usual in the Olympic Games, the country with the most gold medals triumphs in the overall medal standings, rather than the medals together. However, Norway was the best in both ratings.

Norwegian athletes won a total of 37 awards at the Beijing Olympics – 16 gold, eight silver and 13 bronze. In terms of total medals, the Russian Olympic Committee (IOC) came in second with six gold, 12 silver and 14 bronze medals, while Germany came in third with 27 medals (12 gold, 10 silver and five bronze).

For the Norwegian team, the only gold medal not related to skiing was won by the Norwegian speed skating team in the running competition. The other gold medals were won in biathlon, cross-country skiing, Nordic duel and springboarding.

The German delegation, on the other hand, won nine of its 12 gold medals at the Yangtze River Bobsleigh and Luge Track. The Germans triumphed in all bobsleigh, sleigh and skeleton competitions. Only in the monobobsleigh competition did the Germans go without a medal.

The Latvian team also won its only bronze medal in the “rené”, where it won a bronze award in the luge relay competition. Latvia, Estonia and Poland remained in 27th place with one bronze medal.

The Chinese team remained in third place with nine gold medals, but won a total of 15 awards (including four silver and two bronze medals). The United States, Sweden and the Netherlands each won eight gold.
