Outgoing Minister of Education Dijkgraaf is angry that a banga list of Utrecht students has again surfaced. According to him, it proves that there is also work to be done for a culture change in student life. Such lists are “particularly disgusting and completely unacceptable,” says Dijkgraaf.

This morning it became clear that a list is circulating containing the names, photos and telephone numbers of the students. In the file, young female students are judged on their appearance. There are sexist comments included. It is not clear who the list came from. The Utrechtsch Studenten Corps (USC) says that the senders are not members of the corps. Two weeks ago, another list appeared, which included members of the USC.

Mayor Dijksma of Utrecht calls it “extremely painful” that a second list has now emerged. “Regardless of its origins, the objectification and humiliation of women is extremely harmful and downright misogynistic,” it said. She believes it is very important that all facts are brought to light, “so that the people behind this can be punished.”

‘Say something about it’

Outgoing Minister Dijkgraaf also points to the role of people in the area who do not dare to say anything about it. According to him, their role is crucial. “That is why I call on all students to stand up and say that this completely crosses all boundaries.” According to Dijkgraaf, it is important to also tackle sexual misconduct and sexual violence in student life. “It’s about student safety and equality.”

Last year, an agreement was reached between students from MBO, HBO and WO to realize the cultural change. Dijkgraaf says that such a cultural change requires courage. “Because it is not always easy and pleasant to speak out within the culture of student associations.”

The minister points out that he also wants to increase safety at educational institutions. There will be a legal duty of care and complaint and reporting facilities will be improved, he says.
