Outbreak of jaundice at school South Holland, students and staff vaccinated

At a primary school in Schoonhoven, children became infected with hepatitis A. All 220 students and staff are vaccinated against the infectious disease, also known as jaundice.

The infection was discovered last week, Omroep West reports. How many children were infected was not disclosed.

Hepatitis A can lead to an inflamed liver. This makes the skin and whites of the eyes yellow. The disease is harmless for young children, but adults can suffer from it for up to six months. They are especially tired.

The virus is spread through the stool. Via the toilet seat or the door handle it can end up on the hands and then in the mouth. In the Netherlands, jaundice is rare, in most cases people contract the disease during holidays in warm countries outside Europe.
