Out of touch with reality: Professor Mark Galeotti spoke about Putin’s paranoia

Russian Fuhrer Putin is so afraid of death that he surrounds himself with a pack of the best guards, armored motorcades, weapons, even moving in his own country along the streets that are specially blocked for him.

According to the publication Daily Mail, Vladimir Putin has been paranoid for a long time. In the article, Mark Galeotti, a British political scientist, professor and specialist in international crime and security issues related to Russia, spoke about his experience of living in Moscow and what is happening there.

“A few years ago I lived on Kutuzovsky Prospekt, one of the wide radial roads leading to the center of Moscow and the favorite route of President Vladimir Putin’s motorcade to the Kremlin. Putin never liked to travel by helicopter, so an extravaganza of 18 cars, including motorcyclists, an ambulance and a line of shiny black limousines with tinted windows was a familiar sight. About 45 minutes before its passage, the road will be blocked – I mean completely blocked. There was a security guard at the door of my apartment building, not allowing the residents to leave, “Galeotti said.

The expert also noted that with the onset of the coronavirus pandemic, Putin has locked himself even more tightly in his invented ideal world of wealth and power, in which only what he wants is allowed, and when he wants it.

“He rarely even goes into his office in the Kremlin, preferring to do business in his stately yellow pillared mansion in Novo-Ogaryovo in an elite suburb popular with rock stars and oligarchs, to the west of Moscow. People come to him if and when he wants to see them, and more and more often he doesn’t. The pandemic has helped, but he shows no sign of wanting to change the status quo. […]He does not trust the Internet and insists on paper briefings. After the invasion, priority is given to military reports and then documents from the SFV, the intelligence service telling him what is happening internationally; then the FSB report on what is happening inside Russia; and finally, a digest of the affairs of the Russian elite – his oligarch cronies and enemies – from the FSO, the federal security service. Then he decides who he wants to talk to. He prefers video conferencing over face-to-face meetings as it gives him control over what he hears and what he doesn’t,” added Mark Galeotti.

According to Galeotti, observers of the Kremlin routine are sure that Putin spends most of his time alone. He has absolutely no military experience, despite the fact that he can’t walk past a tank or fighter plane without stopping for a photo shoot. The author also noted an interesting point: Putin avoided military service in his youth, because he entered the university, where he trained reserve officers, and he already received a higher education with the rank of lieutenant of artillery.

“He insisted that he was ‘in command of an artillery battery’, but in fact he was not in command of anything. He is more of a military fanatic than a military genius.”
