Osprey back on nest in the Biesbosch

Five years ago, he was the first osprey to set up a nest in the Netherlands, according to Staatsbosbeheer. Then several youngsters crawled from their egg. “Very nice to see him back on his familiar nest”, ranger Thomas van der Es told the regional broadcaster. Rijnmond.

Only breeding ground in the Benelux

In the meantime, there are several ospreys who come to the Biesbosch every year, but according to Van der Es it remains special. “The Biesbosch is the only place in the Benelux where the ospreys breed. This is partly because a lot of fish-rich water has been added to the Biesbosch.”

The ringed osprey has been in West Africa all winter. Staatsbosbeheer has hung a camera near the nest, so that the bird can be followed via a live stream. Highly recommended, says forester Van der Es. “The osprey is a bird to enjoy, its actions are spectacular.”
