The American writer Larry McMurtry has passed away. He was 84 years old and died of heart failure in his home in Archer City, Texas.

McMurtry’s body of work consists of nearly fifty books and dozens of screenplays. Well-known works are the novels The Last Picture Show in Terms of Endearment, both of which were filmed. For his screenplay of The Last Picture Show from 1971 he was nominated for an Oscar. He did not win it, but 34 years later he still received the most important film prize for his script for Brokeback Mountain.

Wild West

Lonesome Dove from 1985 is considered his magnum opus. Looking back on his career, he considered the 1985 western novel, which dealt with the romantic image of the Wild West, as his best work. He won a Pulitzer Prize for it.

McMurtry not only wrote books, he also traded in them. In Archer City, he built a huge second-hand bookshop, one of the largest in the United States. His personal collection consisted of tens of thousands of copies.
